Movie Review: Bad Teacher

I'm not in any way a person who expects too much in every piece of cinema I watch - especially under this genre - but I do expect "something" and that I didn't get in Bad Teacher. Seriously. What was the point of this movie?

I mean, the plot was paper thin and poorly executed, the directing was sloppy and the jokes weren't even close to funny. I laughed maybe three times - and I'm being generous here - throughout the whole movie. There were a lot of jokes, but most of them fell flat and just went over my head.

The other problem I had with Bad Teacher was the fact that every single character in the movie was pretty much unlikeable. Really. Lucy Punch's character was just plain irritating, Justin Timberlake started out as a refreshing contrast to the lead, but became equally unpleasant towards the second half of the film.

And then, there was Cameron Diaz's character, who wasn't even remotely likable in ANY way! Sure, she was supposed to be a nasty piece of work - that's the premise - but come on!! She lied and cheated, and yet she got away with everything and even destroyed the life of another character who actually cares. And that's what we're supposed to root for? Downright dumb!

Sadly, there's no redeeming qualities to the film. Maybe Jason Segel? I don't know.

Overall, I thought Bad Teacher was pointless. I mean, if you have a by-the-numbers plot, annoying performances, and a been-there-done-that tone, then what's the point of making a movie? It's not even THAT entertaining. A lackluster effort which was dumb, disappointing, and decidedly demented.

Music: The Trouble With Girls - Scotty McCreery

Here it is!! The debut single of Scotty McCreery, The Trouble With Girls, which will be including in his upcoming first album, Clear As Day, set to be released on October 4, 2011.

Now, I admit that I'm not the biggest Scotty fan, but this is a decent debut (not counting his coronation single) single. Yes, I was hoping for something more upbeat - in the same vein as Gone - but the song is full of sweet and caring if a bit sappy lyrics that's arguably age appropriate. I think a lot of people, particularly country fans, will like the message of the song and I can see this being a hit country song - think, Jesus Take The Wheel.

Music: Mr. Know It All - Kelly Clarkson

Here's Kelly Clarkson's new single, Mr. Know It All, off her long-awaited new album entitled Stronger, which will be out on October 25, 2011.

I admit, the song is a little lightweight compared to her previous songs, but the simplicity of Mr. Know It All is kind of refreshing for Kelly Clarkson. I love the richness of her voice and it's not as over processed as her vocals in My Life Would Suck Without You. I also didn't expect the interesting contrast between the staccato verses and the melodic chorus. Plus, the structure actually reminds me of Bruno Mars' Just The Way You Are.

IDOL Tournament: Round 3 - Syesha Mercado VS Allison Iraheta

Movie Review: Colombiana

Purely unexpected! Colombiana was nothing special, but I must say that I found myself rather entertained by this polished and energetic action flick. It was solid and punchy at every second.

True, this one had that typical action film set-up complete with a plot that was preposterous, somewhat absurd and arguably thin. But what worked for Colombiana was the fact that it managed to build some great action sequences despite the straightforward and cliched plot - something that's not exactly a bad thing.

Visually, the film was shockingly stunning. From the opening scene with a pretty spectacular cinematography of Colombia as the backdrop to the more complex sequences incorporating some of the most stylized camera work and editing I've seen in a while, this was such a visual treat.

The brilliantly crafted action scenes were also flawlessly executed without going overboard. Some of the stunts were exceptionally shot and faultlessly rendered, the fight scenes were well choreographed and it had it's fair share of slow motion which was used well within the context of the film. I even found the direction of good quality.

But while all of that were enough for some mindless entertainment, the excellent performance of Zoe Saldana made the film better than it actually was. I sure had doubts if she'll be able to pull off a movie all on her own, but she was impressive and quite believable. She brought a lot of feminine charm and spunk to a somewhat bada*s and gritty character. The supporting cast were also good in general.

Colombiana was a straight-up action movie. No more. No less. Taken as a whole, the film wasn’t perfect, but it's the best I could have hoped for. Stylized fights. High production values. Excellent lead.

 RATING: 8/10

Movie Review: One Day

I'm on the fence with this film. I am usually very easy to please when it comes to movies in general and I am such a sucker for sappy love stories but One Day didn't do anything for me. This could've been good - given the premise - but it just didn't work.

To be fair, the movie was shot beautifully with a couple of nice romantic settings. The last few minutes of the movie was also executed quite well and yes, the film had it's fair share of moments if a bit inconsistent.

The acting performances, though not Oscar worthy, were also decent in general. Anne Hathaway was lovely and did well with the material she was given. Somehow, I was even impressed with her English accent. Jim Sturgess had a few good scenes, but his character was incredibly unlikable with zero charm that rooting for him to be with Hathaway's character was almost mean to do. Haha.

But other than those I mentioned, the film was a mess. The storyline seemed a little dry and the plot structure was problematic. Sure, I got the concept and it seemed like a great idea IF executed well, but it wasn't. Instead of continuity and character development, all I got was mostly drab snippets of their lives. There was nothing to make me feel for the characters or even to fully understand their relationship. It was just all flat. I also didn't believe the romance between the two leads. It lacked some emotional connection, which I was crucial for a film under this genre.

Moreover, I found the writing awkward and absolutely choppy. Everything just didn't flow right. It would just jump from one scene to the other without any hints of what happened between the gaps. I was just left dumbfounded most of the time with the continuity of the story. I don't know.

One Day had the potential to be memorable but failed to do so. I admit, it was a decent love story, but it could've been so much better. It's a shame that the movie came to life 15 minutes before the ending. If there's any consolation, at least the film "peaked". Haha.

Movie Review: Crazy, Stupid, Love.

Sure, I had doubts that Crazy, Stupid, Love would be anything but predictable, but there was something to it - something more than your average Hollywood flick. This was a surprisingly brilliant movie and a breath of fresh air that's above the heap of lifeless and senseless romantic comedies.

One thing that separated this film from it's contemporaries was the clever and witty scriptwriting. I thought it was beautifully written, never stiff and everything felt authentic with a couple of appropriately sarcastic and funny dialogue exchanges among all the characters.

The script also managed to furnish scenes where without saying anything important, the characters were able to put so much across. It then achieved a remarkable feat of making me actually care about the characters - which is usually rare!

But of course, that wouldn't be possible if not for the incredibly assembled cast. Yes, the casting really did add so much more appeal to this film. It was in their performances where the success of this romantic comedy resided.

Steve Carell probably gave one of his best performances to date as he was able to transition swiftly his emotions effortlessly. He projected a "humanity" that didn't need to be embellished. Julianne Moore was terrific and pretty sublime in this movie. She was able to easily balance the humor with drama.

Emma Stone also gave a solid performance. She wasn't given nearly as much to do as the others, but she held her own on screen. Ryan Gosling, on the other hand, was impressive as he managed to play his role that's against type. He didn't come off as a douche bag and I actually cared about his character. He even commanded every scene he was on. He was sexy, confident and bound to be adored by females everywhere.

For the most part, the chemistry between couples were wondrously compelling to watch. There were some beautiful, subtle moments of tenderness as well as some heart-rending moments of disconnectedness - especially between Carell and Moore - that never came across as heavy-handed.

Oh, and I have to say that the film was able to maintain a classy type of humor throughout the film. No raunchy comedy. No lowbrow or slapstick jokes. Plus, I loved the "twist" and I seriously didn't see that one coming! Heck, are twists even allowed in these types of movies? Haha.

One minor - yes, minor! - gripe about the film was the lack of time given to the relationship of Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling. While it didn't exactly take away anything from it's greatness, a more fleshed out relationship between the two would've been better.

Overall, Crazy, Stupid, Love was a hilarious and deftly thoughtful movie about love. Astonishing performances and sublime writing. It was indeed a thoroughly clever and impressive film that shouldn't be missed. And just like love, it was bittersweet.

Movie Review: Cowboys & Aliens

With an interesting premise, incredible cast and a director that made IronMan work, I had every right to expect something really good with this film. But while not exactly a terrible film, Cowboys & Aliens was quite a letdown.

True, the contrast of the two genres (western and science fiction) was quite unique, but there's something bleak about how everything was executed. From the concept alone, this should have been a fun ride with cowboys on horses shooting aliens with guns, spears and arrow. But somehow, the film decided to take the serious route and that really bothered me.

I mean, the movie was humorless with very little joy behind it. The premise in itself was silly - in a good way - so I expected the tone of the film to be in some way tongue-in-cheek, but it wasn't and that killed the potential of Cowboys & Aliens to be something really great. Such a shame.

But that's not my only gripe about the film. I found the plot a little weak and inconsistent, and the alien part of the film was a little problematic with tons of plot holes. The pacing was a little uneven too. I thought the first part was dragging and when the climatic battle started, everything felt rushed. Oh, and don't get me started with Olivia Wilde who NEVER got dirty!!

Which brings me to the cast. Well, both Harrison Ford and Daniel Craig delivered fine performances, but there's no character depth to their characters and even to the other supporting cast. So, yes, I didn't care much about any of them.

For what it's worth though, the film was technically well made and that alone made this a lot more tolerable. The cinematography was STUNNING, the art direction was great, the colors were incredibly vivid and visual effects were actually really good. Plus, the set pieces were impressive. The film needed better aliens though as they looked a little generic.

As a single movie for a bit of Hollywood entertainment, Cowboys & Aliens is ok. I didn't hate it, but I felt a little empty after watching the film. It was a mind-numbingly raw experience from a movie that has James Bond, Indiana Jones and Miss Tron. Sad.

RATING: 6/10

Music Video: This Time - Pia Toscano

Did I say that today is a big American Idol music video day? Haha. This time (!!!) it's Pia Toscano's music video for her debut single entitled This Time.

One word: GORGEOUS!! Is Pia Toscano giving Katharine McPhee a run for her money as the most gorgeous woman to ever be on American Idol? Haha. Sure, the music video lacks a solid narrative that's somehow connected to the theme of the song, but who cares? It's not as if ALL music videos have to have a story to appeal to the public. Sometimes, it's all about the visuals and Pia is stunning here. Plus, she shockingly has a good amount of presence that commanded the music video. That, to me, is more than enough. Enjoy!

Music Video: I Love You This Big - Scotty McCreery

As for the video, I think it looks quite nice. I like the editing and there's something about the look and color tone of the music video that's very country. It's simple, age-appropriate and laid back. Scotty looks absolutely natural on screen - although he needs to work more on lipsynching! Haha - and his charisma is just overwhelming. Enjoy!

Music Video: Moves Like Jagger - Maroon 5 (ft. Christina Aguilera)

Yes, it's finally here!! The song, Moves Like Jagger, premiered two months ago when Adam Levine and Christina Aguilera performed this on The Voice. Now, it gets it's own music video!!

Ok. I expected something more epic than this, but who am I to complain? I mean, the song itself is pretty hard not to jam out, there's a Jagger footage scattered in the video and the people impersonating Mick Jagger's moves are kind of cool. See for yourself! Enjoy!

Music Video: Like My Mother Does - Lauren Alaina

Here's Lauren Alaina's music video for her single Like My Mother Does, which debuts on CMT today.

I think Lauren looks gorgeous in this video and this actually proves the point that she's a very marketable country singer. She sounds great, she emotes really well and she looks lovely. I'm still not a fan of her mother even during Lauren's American Idol days, but that's the point of the video (and the song) so whatever.

IDOL Tournament: Round 2 - Syesha Mercado VS Katie Stevens

It's Syesha Mercado versus Katie Stevens today! One was an underdog that no one saw coming and did surprisingly well on the show and the other one was a judges' favorite since Day 1 but fizzled when the live performances started. I'm not really sure how this will pan out. Let's see.

Poll is open for 24 hours only. If anyone's interested in the matchups DAM NATION planned for the coming weeks, click here to check out the entire 64-player bracket (then click again for a zoomed in view).

IDOL Tournament: Round 2 - Paris Bennett VS Melinda Doolittle

Possibly the last diva off for Round 2. It's the incredible Paris Bennett against the amazing Melinda Doolittle. Truth be told, I'm a big fan of both them and their auditions, to me, are probably one of the best EVER on American Idol - of course, with Paris Bennett having the best audition in all 10 seasons. But that's just me. What about you?

Idol News: Pia Toscano Performed "This Time" on SYTYCD; Music Video Preview

I know this is a bit late, but whatever. Pia Toscano performed her first single "This Time" at So You Think You Can Dance. I thought she looked and sounded amazing, and she's obviously improved on her stage presence. Not all the way there yet, but at least there’s progress. Look at how Carrie Underwood has evolved.

Now, another Pia Toscano goodness! Here's a preview of her single's music video, which is set to debut on August 9, 2011 - same day as Scotty McCreery's music video for I Love You This Big. Yes, I'm excited to see this one!! Can't. Wait.

Movie Review: Rise of the Planet of the Apes

To be honest, I wasn't really expecting much from this movie. At one point, I even questioned if there's really a need for another installment of the franchise. But while there were certainly good parts in it, Rise of the Planet of the Apes I thought was just an okay film.

The visuals were easily the strongest part of the movie. Though a bit cartoonish in parts, I thought the overall execution of the effects were quite excellent. I was actually impressed with the fact that Ceasar's character (the ape) had nuances that were astonishingly believable and far more convincing than his human counterparts.

Yes, I found most of the actors average at best. Frieda Pinto was extremely underused, John Lithgow gave a banal performance, and Tom Felton was, well, Draco Malfoy sans the magic. Haha. James Franco, who's usually charismatic, seemed a little ordinary in his portrayal of the lead role. Was it the material he was given? Maybe.

I mean, the character development was there, but most of it fell flat and the actors were left with a limited material to work with. Also, I found the supposedly poignant scenes unmoving for some reason and that, to me, was quite problematic. To be fair, the story was solid enough if a bit silly at times.

Oh, and everything was a little lightweight and toned down in terms of violence and suspense for a film about apes taking over the world. I guess, the film was unable to generate any form of excitement throughout the movie.

Overall, Rise of the Planet of the Apes was not a bad film - far from it actually. It's a decent movie that worked best when the action scenes kicked in, which was roughly 20 minutes before the movie actually ended. Haha. Decent, but forgettable.

RATING: 6/10
