Oh, before anything else let me just say this: Originality means nothing if it ain't sung well. As Matt Giraud said, "You got to sing it good before you sing it cool." Thank you very much!
Anyway, here we go!
DISCLAIMER: I am no expert, but this is my opinion - to each his own - and yours will be in the comments below! Haha.
ROUND 1: 60s
05. Phillip Phillips
The Letter.. and of course, Philip yet again mangled this classic song so much that it was completely unrecognizable! Why? This arrangement was horrid! Sure, he made this song his own, but I didn't think it supported the tone of the song and it just didn't make sense. What Phillip did with the song lacked more than just the melody, but it lacked meaning other than the fact that he's no entirely open in stretching himself musically. I mean, this sounded exactly like the song he's been singing for weeks!! Can't. Even. 4/10
04. Skylar Laine
Fortunate SonI admit, Skylar is a killer performer - possibly the best of the season - and she once again owned that stage. I thought she had tons of energy and her presence was very palpable. Her vocals were a bit uneven though as she had some pitch problems right from the beginning. I also had problems with her diction as I didn't really understand what she was singing. Were there really words to this song? Haha. Good thing, she had enough passion and attitude to somehow save the performance from being a disaster. 6.5/10
03. Joshua Ledet
Ain't Too Proud To BegThis song would not have been my first choice for him as I didn't think that this song works as well without the back up harmonies. But Joshua is one performer who never fails to deliver vocally, and again, his vocals were amazing. I found the whole performance incredibly entertaining and he was just magnetic on stage. 8/10
02. Hollie Cavanagh
River Deep - Mountain HighThe song that sent Pia Toscano home last year! Haha. If you told me two week ago that Hollie could eventually be an actual contender for the title, I'd slap you in the face. But look at how she's really starting to come into her own. This, to me, was possibly one of her strongest performances to date. She commanded the stage like no other, she showed some real good passion, and her vocals were stunning. I adore Pia Toscano, but this was a way more dynamic and interesting performance than that of last year. Good job! 8.5/10
01. Jessica Sanchez
Proud MarySure, Jessica's version paled in comparison to Tina Turner's and it felt a little too mature for her age, but this was possibly the craziest (good thing) performance she ever did so far on the show. Tina Turner is, of course, untouchable, but for someone as young as Jessica to bring that impeccable vocals while moving and prancing so much on stage should still be given due credit. Heck, I would love to see Phillip do what she just did on high heels. Haha. 8.5/10
ROUND 2: BRITISH POP
05. Phillip Phillips
Time Of The SeasonWait, so we are now rewarding contestants because they can really sing the melody? Since when did melody NOT really matter so much in a singing competition? Ugh! These judges are useless! Phillip can literally defecate on stage and the judges will applaud. Haha. I don't know. This performance was slightly better than
his other song mainly because he tried to sing the melody straight, but that actually exposed him as a very weak singer with little control of his pitch. His falsetto was horrible and he strained to hit the higher notes. How did Phillip last this long again? 5/10
04. Skylar Laine
You Don't Have To Say You Love MeI hate this song with a passion, but whatever. I thought Skylar had some solid moments in there especially when she started with an a capella, but as the verse came in, it felt like jumping off the cliff as everything went all over the place. Her twang didn't work for the song, her phrasing was terrible and there was no finesse whatsoever in her interpretation. She didn't give any lines of the song a chance to breath and just charged head on to the next. How I wish her vocals were just as strong as her stage presence. 6/10
03. Joshua Ledet
To Love SomebodyLike all those standing ovations from the judges, his overwrought endings get to be a bit of a routine making it less special if we hear them every week. Still, he managed to make me appreciate the performance despite the oversinging. Why? Maybe because he built up to that moment, so the over-the-top vocals worked. The liberties he took with the melody were brilliant and I felt some genuine connection with the song. Too bad, Jennifer Lopez killed his moment when she just named Joshua as the best singer in the last 50 years. Really? What happened to Whitney Houston, Stevie Wonder and even yourself? Haha. It's silly, I know. 9.5/10
02. Jessica Sanchez
You Are So BeautifulThis, to me, was a thing of beauty! Seriously. Her version of this Joe Cocker classic was outstanding. She showed some brilliant vocal control, some beautiful little touches, great phrasing and an impeccable falsetto. Plus, she learned to not put vibrato into every note. She made some notes be so pure and clear and used the vibrato for emphasis. Technically astounding from a pure vocal point. 9.5/10
01. Hollie Cavanagh
Bleeding LoveLeona Lewis sang the crap out of this song, but Hollie confidently put her own stamp on it. She sounded divine, the intimate quality to the arrangement was genius and she connected with the song shockingly well. I loved that she tried to tweak the song to fit her range and it was one of those special moments. Oh, and when they said that Hollie is "peaking at the right time", that somehow sounded like Jordin Sparks moment to me. We'll see. 9.5/10
