The Voice Philippines: Grand Finale

It’s the The Voice Philippines Grand Finale and this means that all of the angst, anger, grief, sarcastic remarks are all being dusted off and will be applied to the contestant tonight. Haha. But seriously, doesn’t it feel like this season just flies by?

Well, the night was mostly uneventful, but that's not shocking by any means. I mean, the show's momentum and buzz slightly got lost when most of the good singers got eliminated last week. But then again, what do I know.

Here we go!

SOLO

Janice Javier
The Greatest Love Of All
[TEAM APL]
Ugh. Why this song? It's like they choked the life out of Whitney Houston ballads on these singing shows! How lazy can you be to pick an overdone song? Sure, Janice sang a good enough rendition of it, but at times, I felt like it was a bit overwrought especially towards the end. Dear Janice, it's nice to have some subtlety you know. 5

Mitoy
Anak
[TEAM LEA]
But of course, Mitoy was even more pumped up to prove that he could create more noise than Janice! What was this? He started out really well, but when he decided that it was in his best interest to scream at us, I wanted to just punch him in the face. Why does Mitoy hate Freddie Aguilar? What did he do to him? This was so annoying it seemed like revenge. 3

Myk Perez
Give Me Love
[TEAM BAMBOO]
After Janice and Mitoy's ear-splitting versions of their predictable song choices, it's very refreshing to hear Myk's take on Ed Sheeran's Give Me Love. His soothing tone is on full display here and the vocal was light, and tender, yet equally compelling. His connection felt effortless. Myk, you know you’ve done something right when you give me chills. Either that, or my aircon's just too cold. Haha. 8

Klarisse De Guzman
The Climb
[TEAM SARAH]
While I wasn't really a big fan of the song, this Miley Cyrus ditty was probably a good song choice for Klarisse. Cheesy as the song may seem, The Climb has that ability to strike a chord with the audience if competently sung. I thought she sounded confident, her vocals were mostly spot on and she was less stiff on stage. It wasn't as powerful as I was expecting, but it's good enough to trump the first two. 7

ORIGINALS

Klarisse De Guzman
Slowly
[TEAM SARAH]
Hey, you know what would have really worked well in this song? A melody! Klarisse did her best to sell the moment, but without that soaring key change it completely disappointed the audience. I don't know. The song just sounded a bit underwhelming. Yes, Klarisse elevated it from "pure crap" to "meh", but, let's not pretend like this was a good song. 6.5

Myk Perez
Fix You
[TEAM BAMBOO]
Out of the all the original singles, Myk's Fix You wins hands down. It does exactly what it needs to do. It establishes an identity for the singer and gives the voters a clear idea of what Myk Perez will be like as a professional recording artist. People who are into this kind of genre will eat this song up like it's a wickedly awesome cronuts. And when he gets to the chorus? His voice soars. Sure, there were some tired vocal moments, but he so enveloped in the single that it really didn't take away from the performance since there’s such a natural honesty. The song doesn’t feel put on. It feels comfortable! 8.5

Mitoy
Bulag
[TEAM LEA]
On the other end of the spectrum, Bulag is a bit of a mess. Let’s start with the title: it’s terrible. Let’s move on to the message: it’s trite. Sure, it’s a nice message, but how many songs do we really need to hear about this? They are already a plague on the radio. Add to that his annoyingly thin and screechy tone. 5

Janice Javier
Coming Home
[TEAM APL]
Umm, See Mitoy sans the tone. Thank you very much. 6

Benj: Janice song was just as trite as any other American Idol Coronation Song. Very generic.
