DAM NATION Year-End List: 20 Best Movies of 2014

As another year comes to a close, there's only one question - well, at least to those people following DAM NATION just for the movie reviews - that lingers in the air: What were the best films of 2014?

Like every year, 2014 seems to have gone by far too quickly. But, like almost every year, 2014 was filled to the brim with a couple of great movies. From moving dramas to the usual big summer blockbusters, and endless movie franchises, DAM NATION had its work cut out sifting through all the diverse, and downright good films of 2014.

One thing though, it’s not physically and financially possible for me to go and watch ALL films that were released this year, so you may not find some of them here. And yes, I regret to say that I haven't seen the other early Oscar favorites like Birdman, Whiplash, Into The Woods, Foxcatcher, The Imitation Game and the likes, so again, you will not see them on this list.

Read on to see what made the shortlists and let us know in the comments what made yours.

20. Neighbors
Neighbors was raunchy and crude, but wildly entertaining. It can be a total crowd pleaser and if you're one of those people who aren't offended by such humor, this is seriously the movie to watch.

19. Still Alice
Realistic. Emotional. Somber. Julianne. Moore.

18. The Theory of Everything
The Theory of Everything strikes by its unusual simplicity and there's no getting around the fact that this was a beautifully crafted film backed by some flawlessly brilliant performances from Eddie Redmayne and Felicity Jones.

17. Interstellar
"I won't even pretend that I understood the ENTIRE movie with all the buffet of messy ideas that the film fired in all directions, but Interstellar may be worth a glance, just for its magnificent technical achievements."

16. Begin Again
"I didn't put much faith into the movie based on its music, but I have now fallen madly in love with everything about Begin Again, and yes, the film was grounded in simplicity without being preachy and too cliched, and that's what dazzled me the most."

15. The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1
"The Hunger Games: Mockingjay - Part 1 was a satisfying start to the finale and stood on its own as a fairly good film."

14. The Fault In Our Stars
"Charming. Poignant. Funny. Tragic. Thoughtful. Heartwarming. Sweetly devastating. That's The Fault In Our Stars right there."

13. X-Men: Days of Future Past
"This was everything I had hoped and more."

12. Captain America: The Winter Soldier
"Superhero genre is a very crowded field, but somehow Captain America: The Winter Soldier delivered an engaging spectacle, which had the right mix of humor, bombast, and depth."

11. 22 Jump Street
".. all 22 Jump Street needed was the same level of sustenance the previous one had, but the movie somehow took it up a notch delivering possibly one of the funniest and most exceptional comedy sequel this year."

10. Snowpiercer
While not entirely a cinematic masterpiece, Snowpiercer was still a uniquely exquisite film that require more than one viewing to fully absorb the brilliance of what you've just seen.

09. The Grand Budapest Hotel
Charming and stylish, laced with humor and irony, The Grand Budapest Hotel was just simply wonderful. I loved it from the opening frames, and it only got better from there.

08. Fury
"It's hard to say that Fury was "the best war movie ever" - since it all boils down to preference - but I'd rank this up as one of the greats as the film perfectly captured the raw brutality of war backed with an intriguing narrative, confronting but impressive battle sequences, and fantastic character nuances."

07. Big Hero 6
"With an engrossing plot, awesomely lovable characters, genuine humor, and a sharp social message, Big Hero 6 fired on all cylinders with great visual impact and stunning animation."

06. Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
"Dawn of the Planet of the Apes was a definitive sequel that somehow managed to pull off talking apes that ride on horses without turning it into something laughable. That's quite special."

05. Boyhood
So grand in scope, yet so simple in delivery. Boyhood will go down as one of the most earnest and emotional coming-of-age film I have ever seen and the most realistic documentation and representation of life. Astonishing.

04. Nightcrawler
Nightcrawler, to some extent, was a tough movie to watch as it was both dark, creepy, and disturbing, but it was so impeccably directed, written, and acted that it's well worth the discomfort.

03. Edge of Tomorrow
"This was a surprisingly crafty, focused, and infuriatingly enjoyable jaunt. Edge of Tomorrow was one of the most underrated summer blockbusters this year, and straight up, one of Tom Cruise's best."

02. Guardians of the Galaxy
"Guardians of the Galaxy was a genuinely entertaining movie on all accounts. Unexpectedly stellar."

01. Gone Girl
"Gone Girl was possibly one of the craftiest and most satisfying films this year by leaps and bounds. The script was written masterfully, the structure was brilliant, the direction was outstanding, the pacing was spot on, and it has got a lot more substance and plot elements than I ever expected."
