Platinum Hit: Dance Floor Royalty Episode

Ok. So let me begin by saying that the songs from this episode were just GREAT! I got my butt shaking to these jams. Ha ha. Anyway, this episode features a theme where the 11 remaining contestants must write Dance Hit songs. I love this theme. Dance music is extremely difficult to write. You have to make it catchy and care free. That's what it's all about with Dance music. These contestants really impressed me with their songs, no doubt - but, as always, someone impresses you much less than another.

The contestants are joined by Jewel and a guest judge who has had a total of 23 Top 10 hits! That's right, folks! It's the Queen of the Dance Floor! The one and only, Donna Summer. Each contestant is given an mp3 player with a pre-recorded dance track that they must write their Dance Hook to. With thrity minutes to work, the contestants all spread out to write!

RECAP after the jump!!

Nick finds himself distracted by Karen's loud screaming and comments that the only club she had probably ever been to was "a country club". Melissa is writing about natural disasters and nature and I can't stop laughing through her explianation of her process. Scotty says he's had dance hits in Europe and that he'd feel like an asshole if he lost this challenge. Everyone taps along to their mp3 players while Brian comments that he thinks modern music is in need of another "I'm Too Sexy" dance hit and focuses on making his song the next one. Times Up! And the contestants all gather back in the main lobby where Jewel and Donna listen to all of the hooks one-by-one.

Now to be fair, there were some pretty good hooks and some pretty awful ones. I know that a few days after this episode premiered I found myself singing Blessings hook, "Dance Romance", in my head. "If you can't ride the beat beat beat, then you're not the one for me me me." Listen out for it. It's catchy as hell. Donna and Jewel announce that the third place hook belongs to Scotty with "Paint This Club". The second place hook challenge winner is Karen with "Make It Easy". And lastly, the winner of the challenge is Brain with "My Ridiculous". Nick has a genuinely shocked look on his face to which Jewel remarks and he announces that he thinks he should have won and that he hates Johnny. Jewel then gives Nick a stern look and replies that he'll remain stagnent if he doesn't allow himself to grow. Drama drama drama!

Jewel allows Brian to pick his team mate and he chooses Jes. Karen chooses Blessing. Scotty chooses Nick, remarking that he may be the biggest asshole he's met in a while, but he's talented. Brain chooses Jackie. Karen goes with Amber. Scotty and Nick discuss who they want when Nick comments that he hates Sonyae, who is very surprised and finds it to be stupid that Nick chooses to hate everyone on a show where you have to work in teams. Scotty chooses Melissa. Brian is given the option of keeping his team or choosing another member and he declines. Karen chooses Johnny. This leaves Scotty with Sonyae, making Nick angry. Scotty asks Nick and Sonyae to act civil so that their team can work together in harmony. Jewel teels Brain that he and his team may keep the original dance track, but that the others will have to create new beats. She then informs them that their songs will be premiered at an L.A. dance club and will be judged by the club goers.

The groups get to work. Nick and Sonyae put their differences aside and work together, but Melissa feels like her group won't listen to her input and feels like she's not heard. Brian finds himself blindsided by Jes and jackie who have formed their own team and believe his song should not be sang by a male but by females. He shows not fight and let's them have their way. He should have fought for his song. Lame!

Karen, Blessing, Johnny, and Amber are hilarious! Karen's lyricism is the funniest thing ever! With such winning lines as "I'll rub your feet" or "I'm gonna cook you that for dinner, because I know you like that". Recieveing major critcism from her team members, Karen tries to make her song sexier. Blessing feels uncomfortable with the content and backs out of writing lyrics. Amber and Johnny seem completely annoyed. I would have been to.

The contestants run out of time and prepare for the judging. The contestants get dressed for a night at the club. The contestants arrive at a gay club in L.A. where there songs are going to be judged by the crowd. Scotty is very excited to have his song premiere in a gay club since he is also gay. The contestants are joined by Jewel, Kara, Trevor Jerideau, and Donna Summer.

Jewel tells the contestants that the crowd response will factor in to the judges decision over who wins and who leaves. The DJ plays Scotty, Nick, Sonyae, and Melissa's song, "Paint This Club", first and it recieves a good deal of response. The song is very much  so a dance club hit! Very upbeat and fun! Next, Karen, Johnny, Blessing, and Amber's song "Make It Easy" is played. The energy is lacking a bit and not many of the club goers are dancing. Nick comments that the song sucked the the fun out of the room and that the song should have been titled "Cigarette Break". Lol. Lastly, Brian, Jackie, and Jes' song "My Ridiculous" plays and the crowd seems to really be into it! It's fun and provides energy on the dance floor. It was my favorite song, personally!

The contestants return to the house where they are confronted by the judges. They tell the contestants that they are very impressed with the results. Now, the results! Nick, Scotty, Sonyae, and Melissa are called onto the stage along with Jackie, Brian, and Jes. The judges comment on how great both songs were and how they really provided an energy to the dance club and crowd. Jewel then informs Scotty that his team has won and that both teams are safe! The others return to the house waiting room to find out the fate of the last team. Karen, Blessing, Amber, and Johnny come up to the stage where the judges point out the flaws of the song.

Karen is critiqued for her G rated lyrics, while Blessing is questioned about his lack of input. Amber and Johnny are announced as being safe, leaving Karen and Blessing still up for elimination. Jewel states that Karen still has a lot of growth in her lyrical ability and informs her that she will have to work harder if she remains. The judges tell Blessing that he needs to break out of his comfort song and experiment with his music. Jewel announces that songwriting is either "Hit or Miss" and that Blessing has "missed". Karen is saved and Blessing is eliminated.

On a side note, I would like to add that Jewel does seem to have lightened up a bit and that Kara seems to be throwing out the harsh criticism now. Either way, both of these ladies are tough to impress.
