The Voice 4: Live Playoffs Part 1

I hate to say this, but the talent this season is insanely good - possibly the best of The Voice. Of course, that's not to say there are no cannon fodders, but there are no real duds with some pretty strong set of contenders!

Tonight highlighted though how solid Team Adam is and it's annoying that we get to see someone's elimination tomorrow. Can't we just get one from Usher and give space to one of Adam's acts? Oh, and Usher's song choices were abysmal! Did he share the same song list with American Idol?

Enough!

On with the show!

TEAM USHER

4. Cathia
I Have Nothing
Hmm. This song? Really Usher? I admit that Cathia got some incredible vocal range, but I don't think this song choice did her any favors. It didn't highlight her creativity as an artist. It was competent, but very karaoke. 5

3. Vedo
Against All Odds
What are you doing Usher? Vedo deserved a BETTER song than this because he has the potential to be great. Yes, there's a certain power to his vocals that was compelling and his pitch was mostly on point, but he was saddled with a crappy and sappy song choice. Sorry, but I just can't get past this overdone song. 6.5

2. Josiah Hawley
Starlight
This, to me, was a very hard song to sing and for someone like Josiah who's not really a strong vocalist, his singing was far from great. Good thing, he managed to connect well with the song - despite some pitch issues - and he did the best he could with it. 6.5

1. Michelle Chamuel
True Colors
Whoa. A total departure from her usual jaunty performance, but this was a refreshing change from her. I questioned about the song choice at first, but she changed it up enought to make it her own. I liked that her take was raw and unpolished and there's an authenticity to the whole performance. No affections whatsoever. Possibly my favorite performance by a mile. 9

TEAM ADAM

4. Judith Hill
Feeling Good
Judith, to me, is technically a good singer, but the way she navigated the song sounded cabaret and ridiculously overwrought. It felt like she was trying WAY too hard to impress and she did too much with the melody towards the end that it became awfully unrecognizable. There's no way she'll get eliminated after all the hype, which is a shame because she's overrated in my opinion, but she needs to do better than this. 7

3. Caroline Glaser
The A Team
Perfect song choice! This Ed Sheeran song is current and fits her vocal quirkiness perfectly. I thought her tone was exquisite on the song with some pretty phrasing choices. She needs to work on her diction as I couldn't understand some of her words, but that's something she can fix. 7.5

2. Sarah Simmons
Angels
This was a really lovely version of the Sarah McLachlan song! It's not perfect by any means as I felt like she had a couple of pitch issues, but when her voice roughened up a bit, the beautiful texture of her voice was highlighted. I loved her vocal dynamics and transitions. Not her best, but good enough. 8

1. Amber Carrington
Stay
Can I say dark horse? I figured Amber to be a strong contender, but with a strong group of girls in Adam's team, I honestly didn't think she'd stand out. Well, she just proved me wrong. This was pretty impressive. I liked that she stripped down the arrangement of the song and there's a sensitivity to her rendition. Her vocals were solid and I loved the little liberties she took with the melody. Very nice. 8.5

Caroline was easily the odd one out from Adam's team.

OMG team Adam was amazing. I can't believe one them is going home. Honestly, I hope your predictions are correct because though Caroline is great, I think the other three are better.

I'm not ready for Caroline to go yet, though! She's so interesting and cute. I wish they could just keep all of Adam's team and get rid of Vedo and Cathia, though I like them as well. You're right, it's super hard to pick a favorite this season. I'm just going to have to go week by week!

I have to agree, the talent this year has been outstanding. Any of them have the skills to win, although I would predict Caroline to win. She may not be the very best of them right at this moment, but with just a little more work, she could do amazing things. I'm really thankful I got to see this episode as it aired. Because with Twitter, Facebook, and my friends texting me, it's pretty much impossible to avoid spoilers on The Voice, so it's one of those shows I really try to catch live. Last night however, I pulled a few hours of overtime at DISH so I was actually on the train ride home when it aired. Times like these are when I absolutely love DISH Anywhere! And with it, I have the ability to stream all of my live TV channels and/or DVR recordings to my phone, so I was able to catch this show on the ride home, which is a great way to pass the time on an otherwise tedious commute.

To me I didn't enjoy Sarah's performance as much as usual. I loved her since a blind audition but I think her vocal control is all over the place this time. Her growl put me off a little bit, I felt like she used it at the time she didn't really have to use it.

Oh, and I love Michelle's performance a lot. I've been a fan of her since her blind audition.

My prediction

Team Usher
Michelle Chamuel
Josiah Hawley
Vedo

Team Adam
Judith Hill
Sarah Simmons
Caroline Glaser
